Lisa and I are still getting our podcast legs, but we sure are excited about our show! In this bonus episode, we once again introduce ourselves and summarize what we have in store for you. There will be two seasons of the Indie Chicks podcast each year during the summer and winter. During our shows, we will highlight important independent publishing issues and dilemmas that either our listeners or we have faced, reviews of independent authors including some interviews, and end each show with a Publishing Tip of the Week.

Lisa had some great questions for me during our interview for my YA, sci-fi, romance novel, Fireflies. I'm a hopeless romantic, especially when it comes to books, so I was thrilled that Lisa had taken a shine to it. Some of the questions she asked me were about how I conceptualized the idea for Fireflies, my love of dialogue, the setting, my writing process, and my journey to publication. There was also an uncomfortable question about whether or not I was prom queen in high school. Um...no. Lastly, Lisa reviewed my book, and here it is!

Here's Lisa's review of Fireflies:

If you like aliens, Twilight, AND I Am Number Four, you’re going to LOVE Fireflies, by Melissa Koberlein.

Firefles and coffee!

First and foremost, I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up WAAAAAAAAYYYYY past my bedtime because I wanted to read just one more chapter…I had to know what was going to happen next.

In my opinion, that’s the sign of an excellent writer. Melissa created believable characters I really cared about. I cared so much, I sacrificed sleep!

And talk about a story. The whole thing is an allegory for the advance of nanotechnology.

What’s nanotechnology? I thought you’d never ask! According to nano.gov, “Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers.” The idea is that computers will become so small, that we will be able to use them to cure us of illness and injury.Fireflies explores that concept, BUT WITH ALIENS! It’s so cool, so creative, and so fun.

Have I mentioned this is a YA book? The story follows both Will and Marley, two teenagers who fall for each other almost immediately. But there’s a twist. Will isn’t human! Not entirely, at least.

I don’t want to give any more details away, because the whole thing is fantastic, and I don’t want to ruin any of it. Fireflies is thrilling and romantic. We already know I couldn’t put it down…maybe that’s because the tension between Will and Marley is so realistic, while I was reading, I felt like I was in high school again!

The book was also really funny! Melissa has a great sense of humor that really shines throughout the book. It’s perfectly placed to lighten darker moments, but it isn’t overwhelming or distracting. I loved it.

It’s easy to tell Melissa really loves young adult science fiction. I can’t wait to read the next book in the trilogy…Razers.
